There is some amazing scenery around there also, including the Faery Glen which we visited one day with it’s “miniature mountains and valleys” providing a great place to see and play.

You can continue heading north from Uig, and go right around the northern tip or take a short cut across the Quirrang. Either way you will encounter some stunning scenery. You could stop to visit the dinosaur beach or kilt rock, but will end up in Portree.

Portree is the capital with a colourful harbour, and a few shops, although it is usually considered simply a large village. (Our nearest supermarket other than the Co-op is about 3 hours away!)

The main road heads south out of Portree towards Broadford, the second largest village, but turning right before leaving Portree will take you back out towards our house. A few miles out the road, you can take the left fork and head for the north west. The main populated area there is Dunvegan, with it’s castle, and beyond it, you can walk to the coral beach.

The road from Portree circles around through Dunvegan and other little villages and hamlets including Struan, the little fishing village where Elizabeth’s Dad was born and some of her relatives still live. It then ends at Sligachan, half way back between Portree and Broadford where a large caravan and campsite is the main feature, although a children’s play park has now been added beside the hotel.

Heading South will bring you to Broadford where you can turn right and head 15 miles along a single track road towards Elgol where we lived for the first year and a half on the island it is a quiet little fishing village with a harbour, and a little beach, although it comes alive in the summer and is anything but quiet. One of the great “post card views” on Skye is taken from Elgol looking across the bay to the Cuillin mountains, and many people come to admire the view, to spot the wildlife, study the geology or to go walking in the hills. Various boat trips are available from the pier; we have friends who run the Misty Isle boat trip. It travels across the bay on a ¾ hour trip into the heart of the Cuillins, where, after passing a colony of common seals and other wildlife, it ties up within easy walking distance of Loch Coruisk.

The scenery there is stunning and was featured on ITV’s Britain’s favourite view programme a couple of years ago. Loch Coruisk is not accessible by road, and to walk from the nearest road takes about 4 hours, so the boat trip is a great way to get to this totally secluded and beautiful spot.

Continuing South from Broadford, the last major branch road will take you to Sleat. The Sleat peninsula (pronounced “slate”), is known as the garden of Sky. Armadale Castle has some lovely gardens as well as a small museum and children’s play area. A ferry leaves here for Mallaig further down the coast of the Scottish mainland, although nowadays most people come onto Skye via the now toll free Skye bridge, another favourite post card view linking Kyle-of-lochalsh on the mainland with Kyleakin on Skye.

There is soooo much more that can be discovered, but maybe you will have to come visit so that we can discover it together.
